We need you! New DVD recruits SES cadets
27th October 2009Ministerial media release
Emergency Services Minister Steve Whan today launched a new DVD to encourage NSW high school students to join the State Emergency Service cadet program.
Mr Whan launched the DVD during a graduation ceremony for 16 SES cadets at Pennant Hills High School.
"This generation of school students is the future of our emergency services," he said.
"Today we're taking the message to them - we need you!
"It is vital that we attract more young people to the emergency services to ensure they can continue to assist and protect the community in times of natural disasters and other emergencies well into the future."
The DVD, featuring cadets, trainers and teachers from Pennant Hills High, will be used by SES units around the State to promote the cadets program to their local high schools.
Mr Whan said the Rees Government had committed more than $800,000 to the cadet program over two years, with more than 200 students completing the challenging and worthwhile course since it was first trialed last year.
The 10-week course, for Years 9 and 10 students, provides cadets with an overview of the SES and emergency management skills, such as safety and basic first aid, communications and general rescue and search procedures.
Students also gain a valuable insight to the SES ideals of community service, dedication and team work, along with the rewards of volunteering.
"All the cadets who have taken part in the course are to be commended for their extraordinary enthusiasm and commitment to their community," Mr Whan said.
"They have shown their ability to be the leaders of tomorrow. The skills that these students have gained will stay with them for the rest of their lives.
"I strongly encourage any student who is interested in undertaking this program to join up."
