RFS Volunteers Open Stations across NSW

25th September 2009

Ministerial media release

Emergency Services Minister Steve Whan extended a state-wide invitation to the people of NSW to visit their local NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) volunteers for their annual Open Day.

Mr Whan said over 300 RFS stations will be open across the state tomorrow.

"The RFS's annual Open Day is a great opportunity for residents to meet their local volunteers and have a look at how the RFS operates up close," Mr Whan said.

"Many volunteers have been hard at work in recent weeks carrying out hazard reduction work, but tomorrow they will be available to discuss essential fire safety information and help people better prepare themselves for the coming bush fire season.

"Officially the bush fire season starts next week and residents in bush fire prone areas should be making sure they have taken all precautions to prepare themselves for what potentially could be a serious summer of bushfires.

"The expertise and advice available to residents at RFS stations across NSW is invaluable as we head into another potentially dangerous fire season.

"During Open Day people will be able to gain information on what to do to best prepare their properties and what they should be doing if a bush fire occurs."

Mr Whan said the RFS Open Day is not only an opportunity to gain valuable advice, it is also a fun and entertaining day out for children.

"Children always love climbing aboard fire tankers, and this is a fun and entertaining way for them to begin learning some valuable lessons about fire safety.

"Brigades across the State have organised a wide range of demonstrations, activities and exhibits to inform and entertain their local community as well as showcasing their expertise and skills," said Mr Whan.

For people wanting more information about their local brigade and Open Day activities check the RFS website at www.rfs.nsw.gov.au.
