Minister for Emergency Services Urges Storm Season Preparation

21st September 2009

Ministerial media release

The Minister for Emergency Services Steve Whan today strongly urged people around NSW to do all they can to prepare for the storm season.

Mr Whan joined with State Emergency Service Commissioner Murray Kear in making the call for people to take precautions at the launch of StormSafe Week, a joint initiative of the SES and Bureau of Meteorology.

"Storms are the most costly natural disaster to affect the NSW community, costing $217 million annually," Mr Whan said.

"Unlike floods and bushfires, all properties are potentially at risk of damage. A few simple actions undertaken by households and businesses now can make a significant difference if they are affected by a severe storm.

"Cleaning out debris from gutters, downpipes and drains; keeping your roof in good repair, clearing up loose items from your yard and balcony and trimming back overhanging branches are important yet simple ways to prepare your property for storms."

"Doing that work now can help improve your home's chances of weathering a severe storm.

Commissioner Kear said that the SES was well prepared to provide assistance to the community during the coming storm season.

"SES volunteers across the state are well resourced and train regularly to develop those skills necessary to provide assistance in an emergency."

"Should members of the public require the assistance of the SES due to storm damage, they should call their local SES Unit on 132 500."

Mr Whan paid tribute to the SES volunteers for their tireless work to protect and assist the community in times of emergencies and natural disasters such as storms.

"The SES's 10,000 volunteers are ready around the clock to help when they're needed, often in the most trying and inclement conditions," he said.

"I congratulate them on their efforts in helping to ensure the safety of the New South Wales community."

StormSafe Week runs from the 21st to the 27th of September.

Further information on storm safety and preparedness can be obtained by calling the SES on 1800 201 000 or at www.ses.nsw.gov.au
