Minister thanks firefighters and warns of tough season ahead

14th September 2009

Ministerial media release

Minister for Emergency Services Steve Whan today praised the 800 fire fighters who successfully battled 60 fires over the weekend.

Mr Whan said the soaring temperatures and high winds over the weekend were a reminder that this season would be dangerous and difficult.

"Firefighters from the Rural Fire Service, Fire Brigades and National Parks and Wildlife all joined to fight 60 fires across the state at the weekend.

"Twenty of those fires raged out of control at times and were a real concern to people's homes.

"All operations were fought successfully by more than 800 fire fighters and 15 aircraft across the state, and we owe them all a tremendous debt of thanks.

"Around 30 homes in Guerilla Bay were seriously threatened with flames at the property borders, but the RFS fought hard throughout the weekend to eventually defeat the fire.

"A small number of homes were threatened at Bob's Farm near Port Stephens, and a home at Tilba was saved at the last moment after the family was evacuated and aircraft waterbombed the home to narrowly save it," he said.

Mr Whan said the weekend served as a reminder that this season is looking very difficult due to the high temperatures and dry, windy conditions.

"We are urging people to clean up their properties now. Eliminate as much potential fire fuels as possible from yards, gutters and anywhere near your home.

"These early hot conditions are making planned Hazard Reductions very difficult, with a number of them forced to be cancelled over the weekend.

"Pay close attention to radio bulletins and the RFS website at www.rfs.nsw.gov.au for fire ratings and warnings. Have preparations in place to leave your home if the conditions look like threatening your home. Have a location to go to and if the RFS advise you to leave, then leave early," he said.
