7th September 2009Ministerial media release
Member for Cabramatta Nick Lalich represented Minister Steve Whan to officially open the Fairfield State Emergency Service Unit's new $113,000 operations centre.
Mr Lalich joined SES Commissioner Murray Kear to thank members of the unit for their hard work on behalf of the local community and open the upgraded facility.
He said the new operations centre would greatly improve the unit's training and operational facilities, boosting its response capabilities.
"The new operations centre includes upgraded information technology, which will be used for operational and planning activities, as well as record keeping and data retrieval," he said.
"High quality facilities are essential when SES volunteers are called to respond to emergencies such as floods and storms.
"This new centre will mean the members of the Fairfield SES can more effectively manage requests for help from the public.
"The total cost of the facility is $113,000, with the State Government providing Fairfield City Council with $43,000 towards the project."
Minister Whan thanked the Fairfield volunteers for their dedication and hard work to help people in need during storms and other emergencies.
"The members of the Fairfield unit have put more than 4,500 hours of their time into storm, flood, community and other activities over the past year," he said.
"The people of the Fairfield local government area know they can rely on the SES to help them in emergencies. The volunteers deserve our thanks and gratitude."
Mr Kear said the new operations centre was a welcome boost for the unit's volunteers.
"The Fairfield Unit plays a vital role in the safety of its community, in particular responding to floods and storms," he said.
"This new operations centre will boost the unit's ability to respond to requests for help from the local community and to provide out of area assistance when required."
