Minister thanks volunteers for more than 300 years' service

17th August 2009

Ministerial media release

Emergency Services Minister Steve Whan presented 14 NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) volunteers and staff on the weekend with awards recognising their valuable commitment to the Cumberland community.

Mr Whan joined local volunteers at the Service's 5th Annual Cumberland Zone Ball to thank the volunteers for their hard work and commitment and present the awards.

"Between them, these 14 members have amassed more than 300 years of experience," Mr Whan said.

"These awards are recognition of their dedication and professionalism over these years.

"These men and women have played an integral role in their communities, whether fighting bush fires or assisting during other emergencies such as floods, storms and road accidents.

"They have not only assisted the Cumberland community but also areas much further a field when the call for help has gone out."

The awards presented by the Minister included three National Medals, five 10 Year Long Service Medals, one 20 Year Long Service Medal, four 30 Year Long Service Medals and one 40 Year Long Service Medal.

"While RFS members don't volunteer their time for awards or accolades, this is a way of the Cumberland community and NSW saying 'thank you' for their hard work," Mr Whan said.

"Every day, in towns, villages and cities across the State, you'll find RFS volunteers giving their time to assist and protect their communities.

"It is fitting that these medals are being presented at the 5th Annual Cumberland Zone Ball, where volunteers and staff come together to celebrate the volunteering spirit before the hard work of the fire season starts.

"These awards are recognition of the dedication and commitment of these men and women to our community," he said.
